FASCIAL RELEASE AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
Fascia, a connective tissue known as the Body’s Organiser, resembles cling-wrap, wrapping around every organ, muscle, vein, artery and nerve, literally holding us together and separating the structures, allowing for free movement between muscles, organs etc and their surrounding tissues. Fascia also keeps us upright, supporting our posture and movement three dimensionally as well as acting as a shock absorber for the body.
Fascia should be elastic, pliable, hydrated and fluid, to allow for stretching and so that muscles can glide over each other, but through poor patterns of posture, too much exercise, not enough exercise, surgery or injury, it can become tough, shortened and dry, making us feel stiff and more prone to injury as our range of movement is reduced when our fascia is dry and tight.
The impact of too much sitting, slouching, any repetitive but limited movement, including hunched over a steering wheel for much of the day, shortens the front lines of fascia and lengthens the back line.
